Clutch Wear

On manual gearboxes clutches can wear out and are generally not covered by warranty. Clutches in manual gearboxes are a normal wear-and-tear item and will eventually wear out due to normal use and the friction material on the clutch disc. Factors that accelerate this wear include rough driving habits like aggressive starts and riding the clutch (resting your foot on the pedal), and driving conditions such as frequent stop-and-go traffic or towing heavy loads.

Clutch Replacement

Clutch replacement can be time consuming and expensive with costs running into several hundred pounds. Every car’s clutch is different so we don’t stock these items but most of our clutches can be ordered are arrive next day. A new clutch will improve your car’s performance and make it more efficient on fuel. A clutch typically lasts between 50,000 and 100,000 miles, but this can vary significantly, with some lasting much less (around 30,000 miles) or more (over 150,000 miles) depending on driving style, environment, vehicle type, and maintenance practices.

Getting more miles out of your clutch

Smooth driving, avoiding city stop-and-go traffic, and regular vehicle servicing all contribute to a longer clutch life. By using the handbrake and not solely relying on the clutch to keep you in place on a hill, you can prevent excessive wear and tear. Revving too much can cause the clutch pedal to become ineffective, so you should put the handbrake on when it’s appropriate to do so when performing an uphill start.
