Fuel Economy

With the Gulf War affecting fuel prices it is more important than ever to get the best fuel consumption out of your vehicle. Here are some tips:

1. Drive Economically (“Hypermiling”)

Accelerate Smoothly: Avoid rapid acceleration and hard braking, which can lower fuel efficiency by up to 40% in stop-go traffic.

Drive in the Highest Gear: Shift up early (around 2,000rpm) to keep RPMs low.

Maintain Steady Speed: Use cruise control on motorways for better fuel efficiency, though avoid it on hilly roads.

Anticipate Traffic: Look ahead to avoid unnecessary braking. Easing off the accelerator earlier allows the car to coast, reducing the need for heavy braking and subsequent acceleration.

Reduce Speed: Driving at 70mph uses 9% more fuel than at 60mph, and up to 25% more than at 50mph.

Avoid Idling: Switch off the engine if you are likely to be stopped for more than a minute, such as at railway crossings.

2. Vehicle Maintenance and Weight

Check Tyre Pressure: Under-inflated tyres can increase fuel consumption by up to 4%. Check them monthly.

Lighten the Load: Remove unnecessary items from the boot. Every extra 50kg (roughly 110 lbs) can reduce fuel efficiency by 1–2%.

Reduce Aerodynamic Drag: Remove roof boxes, roof racks, and bike racks when not in use. An empty roof rack can add 16% drag at 75mph.

Regular Servicing: Ensure your car is serviced according to the manufacturer’s schedule to keep the engine running efficiently.  Contact Midroad Garage to book your next service to optimize your fuel economy.

3. Usage and Technical Tips

Air Con vs. Windows: At low speeds, open windows. At higher speeds (above 50 mph), use air conditioning, as open windows create high aerodynamic drag.

Avoid Short Trips: Cold engines are less efficient. Combine errands into one longer trip to keep the engine warm.

Choose Fuel Wisely: Shop around for the best price, as supermarkets are often cheaper than branded forecourts.

Consider Alternatives: Consider car-pooling, using public transport, or walking/cycling for short trips.

By implementing these strategies, drivers can mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices and ensure better fuel consumption.
